Uh, yep ... Indiana looks bad yet again. Just once, I'd like something positive to be shown about this state ... once, is that much to ask? Cerpicio sent this to me.
Gradually degenerating into ignorance and complacency.

Phase out
According to personnel and staff at the rehab hospital, Mom is doing so fine with independance athat she might be discharged mid-week, rather than end of week. The doctors and staff are meeting today to discuss her progess and likely discharge date. It may be in a couple of days -- Thursday, but no final word is yet available.
I'm glad that she worked hard for this. Generally, she is lazier and not interested in helping herself. Here, she either changed her heart or faked well an interest in growing. She's courteous with staff, obliging. She's tired often, but well. It will be good when she leaves and can work at home and live better with more flexiblity.
Father has been ill -- allergies and possible cold. I hope that he finally rests and wins the battle of colds with the cocktail and buffet of meds he has at his disposal. Where she will do out-patient rehab is still up in the air. I will have to talk with her case manager about where, when, how long (ballpark).

Be good patriot
I'm afraid that I'm a good patriot not because I watched the hours of memorial services or highlights (I didn't watch any of that), nor that I wear red-white-blue clothes on national holidays (I don't), nor because I fly a flag on the front of the house (I don't). I'm a good patriot because I believe in the US, despite its shortcomings. I love my country and its ideals. If you have to label yourself, it's likely that others can't see you as you claim to be. Wearing crosses and crucifixes by people so sinful that you'd more likely believe they were athiest or evil influence warping the minds of others ("the force has a strong influence on the weak minded"). Drug using, dealing, raping, murdering, assaulting people (60 some percent of rap) aren't followers of peace and love whether they claim Christianity, Judism or Islam).
I'm sad that "then you're with the terrorists" is used as a perfunctory statement like "Snowball did it", but with the childish strength of "I don't like you anymore. I'm not playing with you anymore." This defining phrase really underscores lies and ill-will propoganda.
Freedom should be important -- I don't remember having a memorial service for the return of the hostages in Iran, held for over 400 days. I don't remember having a memorial service for those killed by neo-nazi extremists (McVey, et al.) I'm pointing out that you keep memorials in your own ways. Televising it like a parade (parade gets less coverage) calling for "all good patriots" to watch. Sad, sick. People die and evil lives.
The people in NYC were killed by terrorists who could have used 50 planes through the US in many different cities. It is important to remember they died unjustly, as if there were just ways to die. I find it improper to claim victory with the memorial service --- or to claim patriotism because of being there -- or watching it, or broadcasting it. A patriot isn't a person firing fireworks on July 4th, it is a person loving their country.
The "must watch television" coverage of September 11 memorial services should be as optional as the Superbowl. You don't have to watch it, even if you like sports or football. Opting out, doesn't make you unAmerican or unpatriotic.

Standing ovation
Today in mother’s workout, I got to see her stand for periods of time – perhaps ten minutes standing, then five minutes sitting. She played cards while standing. I don’t know the therapy accomplished with that. She got back to room in pain, and I read to her. She had some “throbbing” pain and requested me to rub her legs for moments only. I read some to her and later, she stopped. She fell asleep on her on accord. Shortly before her 11:39 PT she had pain meds and the nurse then requested at-home med sheet. Thankfully I brought this today. The nurse added this to the bundle/file folder of her mess. She predicted that Mom would be out by the weekend. I mentioned to her the penny bet that Father and I had on her discharge date, I bet on Friday, he on Thursday. Though, I don’t know how close she might have come, the nurse guessed Wednesday. Hey, wouldn’t that be grand!
She is in good spirits and is obviously growing strong. Her late morning PT was a little late, as there were some more critical need patients that took longer than expected. In lieu of this, mother spun around and got to be better on her wheelchair. She’s the new NASCAR wheeler, perhaps.
Curse it! I have to finish early … my battery low and no plug in sight in the therapy room. Blast!
So, the big news is that she stood!
----
Wow! Some of the ladies here -- yumm... Mom's OT (occupational therapist), suweet! I'd pull a Judd Nelson if she were to ask me, "Where's your lunch?"
Ha! "You're wearing it!"
Anyway -- bitter cold in whole building, you'd think that there was a winter warning outside or a heat warning -- necessitating the too - strong of AC

Wrestling
I saw on SPIKE TV, an ad for Ultimate Fighting (also super wrastling) ... there were four different ladies in tight little outfits, mildly sweaty -- hot! I wondered to myself -- what is the relationship? I finally found it! The viewer is wrestling with sexual frustration!

Burnt lungs

It amazes me how many medical professionals smoke ... what I mind is that they know better -- know that (thankfully I don't have it) asthmatics could suffer greatly as well as many others.

Random bits
While under the veil of pain meds and pain my mother was repeatedly asked her DOB for verification -- right med for right patient; she grew tired of being continually asked. "You'd think you'd right it down" -- quite funny after the fact.
"It hurts, but it's worth it" (regarding her therapy).
"No one's every been happy in the therapy room -- we'd wonder what was going on"; nurse mentioned to us. We had a conversation about switching whiskey for the tea and hence -- less painful, goofy therapy sessions.

Eek! It's a geek!
I saw a copy at Walgreens. I thought it was a joke or a single issue, but I was wrong ... so wrong. Hey, dudes! That movie series is like, um ... probably done.

How could it be worse?
Perhaps I should start digging graves, then finding that not digging graves -- doing almost anything else, would be better so that each day is okay or grand not dismal.
I'm not so down. I'm just not where I want to be; so I struggle, though not with depression. I struggle with stress the Yin and I the Yang (not wang).

Flip side
I've slept terribly, worried, then been pissed -- a bevy and ocean of emotions -- tides pulling in and out. After it all, I step back, lie down and am happy that my mom is really okay. There's so serious problem; not now, not soon. It was a build up to steam, and I'm finally winding down.
My now, current ulcer-inducing problem is my unemployment. That now is a thunderstorm. It hurts when I attempt to sleep -- stress eating my stomach.

There was a nurse or tech who was in the room at hospital. My mother, apparently was sure that she was married (likely through a conversation) stated, "She's married to Dick".
"You got that right", she said pointing to her side -- slightly showing that she was pregnant. Interestingly, she wasn't wearing a wedding band. I drew my conclusion -- draw yours.

Whom I saw
I saw a woman from a school where I often subbed and two-fold, she and her husband attend the folks' church and Sunday School. Their mother is to be admitted to the rehab hospital after her surgery. It was just odd seeing her there. She then remembered that her progress had been announced sometime at church.
Another person I saw there was a cute Physical Therapist; well, married and cute.

Rehab experiences (incomplete)
The schedule for therapies changes, as do the therapists. There is a job board and each patient is given a daily roster of whom they see and when. The patients, by the third day, are expected to come on their own accord to the designated areas for therapy. They are each, also, responsible for their own pain management and requesting of pain meds.
Mom seems satsified with the place presently. Today was assessment, where the therapists determine her weak areas for study and improvement. She is tired and sore, but I think will work through it just okay. She was not as good in the regular hospital with the thearapists, but I feel here, she will be better.
They have meals always at the same time and she likes the meals there much better than at hospital (main). She used a wheeled walker today and likely will have that upon completion of therapy. Overall, I'm happy with what I have seen, in that they push her to successfully complete in a reasonable amount of days (2-14; average 10).
Father and I returned in the afternoon and Mother was happy that she learned how to use a shower bench to enter the tub for a shower. She did a lot of moving today and was tired early. She found that a walker with wheels worked much better. She still has much to learn and strength to gain.
Good news for her, I found the AC, for her room was, well ... hot.

Yet another move
The thing that shook me was the mix of school and nursing home feel. Oh, eerie feel of the nursing. If it costs $30,000 annual, as my father suggests to keep a person in nursing home, I'd rather hire a nurse. I hated that feeling -- unnerving.

Here I was drifting
MR's photo shows a very tired and well-filled me. I also see rock 'm' sock 'm' robots, a sockless foot with big toe pointing, and blonde hair on the left attached to a white sweater.
