I found it lying on the grass. A raccoon had dug up trenches looking for this thing or one of its kin. I guess raccoons are a bit like cats in this way, in that this tasty meal (high energy, better than corn from the cobs left everywhere as well) really should have been eaten, not tossed away.
It hasn't been cold enough to have died due to cold or heat or starvation. Perhaps it was just time for it to die, but ... I find that unlikely.
Gradually degenerating into ignorance and complacency.
